Tutorial notes 23/5/18

I met with Jill and Imogen on 23 May. My PRP will be between 6 and 21 September 2018.  Jill said she had booked a room for my exhibition from 19 September (2018?).  I also need to deliver 2,500 words of writing.  [Is 2,500 the maximum or a minimum?  I was aiming for 5,000 as an artist/literature review – and I have plenty to say with my 4 artists.  Will my Sampler musings be added to this?  Or do I keep them back for inclusion next year?]

If there was a choice of dates for PRP, I would prefer it to be as early as possible, so Jim and I can go away for a holiday after assessment, and before new academic year, and in good weather for cycling in Holland!

We reviewed the sampler and learning inherent within it.  We touched on the intelligence of coding; complexity and intelligence of pattern; ability to improvise; that stitch carries forward meaning and culture; portrays and structures identity; and symbolises a narrative.

I need to use my exhibition to ask key questions.  (This is a useful tip – half way through my Masters, I don’t need to answer the questions, but need to identify what occurs to me during the reading/stitching/art class, and carefully structure the consequential questions).

Which women?  Why not recognised?   Needlework and skill.  Why not recognised?
What does Embroidery relate to? (Not silver and gold metalwork. Plasterwork ceilings/pargetting? Rugs? Is it crafts with a soft malleable nature?  Hard(man)/Soft (woman)?  What are the connections?  Attention to nature?
Think about illuminated books and manuscripts,  (in relation to the red border on the sampler)
Link referring back to classical sources with Grayson Perry.

JJ/IR instructed me to get on and properly box frame and glass the sampler! Oyster or White.
Look at Michael Brennand Wood. Computerised pattern.  Where does pattern take us – pattern-travel-trade. Pattern shows all sorts of influences. Range of influences from my embroidery to Grayson Perry etc.  It’s a tool for understanding.

Consider artists who look back for specific reasons.  Cathy de Monchaux, Judy Chicago, Helen Chadwick (arch and pattern painting) Lushness via contemporary means. Link up their reasons.

Debate about Assessors for my PRP. Mandy Havers; Andrea Hannon; Jonathan Waller; Damien/Alex.  Sarah Casey
