Today our MA By Project group met the Verifier for our course. Jill Journeaux, I have discovered, is a Professor from Coventry university who stepped in when the original verifier declared she knew one of the students, so was unable to act.
About half our class had a 10 minute one-to-one with Jill. I was one of the students she wanted to meet. Jill was very interested in my subject matter - valuing women, the domestic and mundane, exploratory artwork playing around with increasing the scale of insignificant domestic objects and portraying partial views of an object. I also explained the significance of "my friend's Mum", the achievements of unknown women, and that I had taken Anita to the private view at University of Herts to see the work about her Mum in the Alumni show. Then Jill said she knew Sally, my former tutor! I was non-committal.
Jill wanted to know how big the Portrait of Mrs Konieczny was (13" x 36"), then asked how many I aimed to do. I explained I had planned 5, but the amount of stitch (304 stitches in each black crossword square), and the state of my neck meant it would be 3. I described Aunt Joan and Miss Evans, and their achievements, and she appeared to fully comprehend why I found them significant women. I expanded on my views on values by explaining I aimed to enter the Jerwood Drawing Prize once I had the wooden jig back from assessment, seeking to explore manual and intellectual values.
I also said I had found the class wonderful and that it had really expanded my horizons.
Once home, I looked her up online. She is a hand stitcher/artist who works with themes of the domestic and mundane! So she understands how long it takes me to work each piece.
The MA By Project class have their final feedback on Tuesday 7 June. And I have had a ball!
