Nancy Spero class at City Lit"

"The Whole Body of Work" in situ at City Lit - and dazzled by sunlight.
Today's class was the culmination of the previous 3 weeks work.  We had researched the female archetype at the British Museum, worked with contemporary images and interpreted both sources in mono print and tracing.  Today we compiled them into a frieze.  We were told to remember Spero's principles - Strength; assertive; dynamic; own the space.  Think about using two pen drawings for active figures (on my red mirrored end figures), loose inking to add colour (did not use this), cut out collage images in a simple way - symbolic.

At Heidi's suggestion, I restricted my interpretation (i.e. set some rules):

- simplify (maximum 2 drawings)
- mirror the images
- multiples
- space
- scale.
Left hand side

Right hand side.
There is found lettering on some of the images; my writing around the paired pink figures; stamped quotations, and a drawing on the lone pink figure.  It looks better in real life as the space works.  I was pleased with it - my work is often too busy and I have removed about half the images I started with.

A brilliant class.  I will continue to read about Nancy Spero.  Well done Heidi Wigmore.
